Regionally, the cherry birch may be called by other common names, including black birch, sweet birch, mahogany birch, Virginia roundleaf birch, or spice birch. Of all the types of Maple trees in North America, the Red Maple is the most widespread. The tree is native to the eastern U.S., from Maine to northern Georgia. Its broken twigs emit a spicy wintergreen fragrance and fermented sap is an ingredient used in birch beer.
